We try to avoid the early commercialization of Christmas every year (but I think if Ashley had her way we'd have Christmas decorations up year round), but this year we thought the kids would enjoy going and seeing the Christmas Tree lit at one of our malls and they did this the weekend before Thanksgiving. It didn't turn out as great as we had hope because even as well as the kids could be bundled they still complained about being cold (mainly Charles, Keisha how ever was plenty warm and didn't make a peep).
We waited around with the rest of the crowds for about 30 min before they actually lit the tree. They had an acapela group there singing to pass the time by and while they sang Adahleigh danced her little heart out. Adahleigh is a huge lover of music and love to dance to it no matter where she is and she also picks up tunes and lyrics really quickly. Since starting in primary she comes home every week singing at least one new song which they taught that day and knows almost all the lyrics.
The did think it was pretty neat to see the tree all lit up, but they were more excited to get back in the van to get warm.
The following week we had a small Thanksgiving celebration with a couple of my classmates that also have young families. After having been so cold the weekend before, Thanksgiving day was more than warm enough to take a walk to the park will all the kids to let them play after our Thanksgiving meal. The next following days greeted us with snow.
This year we were able to get a tree permit to go out and cut down our own tree. We did this with our neighbor, but due to the snow we weren't able to take everyone out because the mountain pass we had to go up required chains to get up and we only had some for the pickup. It was probably a good thing though because when our neighbor and I got up to the designated area the snow was soft and waist deep and the wind was blowing pretty hard with the snow coming down, so the kids wouldn't have lasted long. They did go and play in the snow at lower level for a bit while trees were being searched for.
The next morning we were pleasantly surprised to find snow down around us (it was the first snowfall of the year by us, and one of only four that we've gotten so far). We got the kids bundled up and let them go and enjoy the snow. Adahleigh made snow angles while Charles tried to eat as much snow as possible. We just had to keep a close eye on him so he didn't eat any brown or yellow snow since everyone in our complex has a dog and figures they don't have to clean up after it when there's snow on the ground.
A couple weeks later our complex had scheduled Santa to come, so we were going to take the opportunity to let the kids go see him. When we told Adahleigh she got really excited and said that she needed to make a card for Santa and that Santa likes snow, so we sat down with her and Charles to make snowflake cards and let them color them.
When the day came we took the kids over to the clubhouse (after I had gotten done with rotations for the day) to see Santa only to find everything locked down. We later found out that they had sent Santa home over an hour early because no one was showing up and didn't bother to leave a note or anything.
Luckily, our local library had a Santa come later in the week, so the kids weren't too disappointed.
Adahleigh was excited to see Santa and went and hopped right up on his lap to talk his ear off.
Charles on the other hand wasn't too sure about sitting on his lap, and started crying shortly after getting there and then hopped down.
He than sat on the floor a safe distance away and just watched. After Adahleigh was done, Charles did make sure that Santa got the card he made for him, but he wouldn't get any closer than arms length to give it too him.
Keisha initially hinted that she may cry so we made things quick before she had the chance, but after getting the picture she seemed to settle down and could've probably be left there on his lap longer. To end this post well let Adahleigh serenade with her rendition of Away in the Manager. A couple weeks after this the primary sang it for sacrament, we asked her if she wanted to go up and sing with all the primary kids (she was still in nursery) figuring she might say no, but she was more than happy to go up. At first she was a little nervous, but once they got going she sang her little heart out and seemed to know the songs better than the sunbeams.
